The parish in Maszewo was founded around 1305, although, according to some sources, the area had been owned by the Cistercian order since 1251. The parish church of St Adalbert the Bishop and Martyr was built in the 15th Century and thoroughly remodelled in the 19th Century. After defeating the Prussian army on 12 August 1759, the Russian troops looted the nearby villages and towns. The church in Maszewo was not spared, losing its furnishings. Around 1913, a new steeple was added. In 1945, the church steeple was destroyed by the retreating German troops so that it could not be used by the advancing Soviet army as a strategic point or sniper’s nest. After World War II the steeple was rebuilt and serves the local citizens to this day.
