The first mentions of the castle date back to 1298; back then, it was a wooden hold and would remain so until the 16th century when it was rebuilt as a masonry hold. However, over the years, the walls gradually subside in the quaggy soil and the whole structure threatened to collapse. It was then reinforced with timber beams, but that failed to prevent the castle’s deterioration in subsequent centuries. Today, Carolath is mostly ruined.
