High-quality lignite was mined since 1873. The mine, called “Emiliensgluck”, was owned by von Bockelberg family. Destroyed in World War II, it was reopened in 1950 under the name of “Sieniawa” Lignite Mining Pit. The lignite was extracted by surface mining and underground mining. The underground lignite mine, the only of its kind in Poland, operated from 1970 to 1991. The state-owned enterprise was liquidated between 1997 and 2002, and since 2002, the mine has been operated as a limited liability company under the name Kopalnia Węgla Brunatnego “Sieniawa” Sp. z o.o., extracting the coal by surface mining. You can see the post-mining pits at the road from Sieniawa to Wielowieś. In front of the office building of the mine there is an exhibition of historic means of transport used in the past in the underground mine.
