Around 1 km east of the village of Biała, you can spot a hill known as Wyszkow Hill (Polish: Wyszkowa Góra), reaching 130 m above mean sea level. Legend has it that centuries ago, these lands were inhabited by the Wends (ancestors of the Slavs) who prayed to a god named Wisko. The deity’s statue was kept in a temple on Wyszkow Hill. Each spring, as the nature was waking up from its winter slumber, the locals would carry the idol through the village to a shallow pond. There, they would wash the statue clean of the dust accumulated throughout the year, and then carry it in a procession through the fields, praying for blessings and rich crops. Afterwards, Wisko would be returned to his temple and the water used to wash the statue was considered to be “holy”. Today, there is no trace left of the wooden temple and the statue, but a large boulder remains. According to the legends, it marks the burial site of Wisko, or Wyszkow as he is called these days.
