Dating back to 1520–22, the church was owned by the Knights of the Order of St John, known also as Knights Hospitaller. Every two years, the ceremony of accolade (or dubbing) was held there. The fire of 1814 destroyed the steeple which was rebuilt 3 years later. Inside the church, you can see a great variety of valuable works of art, including the altar made with 16th Century reliefs arranged in six layers. The vault of the church is supported by 8 pillars and its intricate ribs are shaped into Maltese crosses filled with symbolic paintings, mainly the crests of various noble families.
