The best preserved fort on the Polish side of the border, “Żabice” was built in the years 1887–90 on a height to control the roads from Słubice to Kostrzyn and Słońsk. The fort has a pentagonal shape with a dry moat. The idea of building a ring of forts around old fortresses was based on the concept of creating a ring of self-reliant strongholds within the range of protective artillery fire. The Kostrzyn Fortress also includes forts named “Czarnów”, “Gorgast” and “Sarbinowo”. Today, the fort is leased by a private company which created a shooting range inside the walls. Please contact the tenant to arrange a tour of the fort (which may be difficult during events).
