The building was completed in 1879 after the old timber town hall in the Town Square had been demolished in the 1830s. The new town hall was built in a street parallel to the Town Square and housed the magistrates’ court, as well as the town custody suite and a restaurant. The outline of the old town hall is marked by coloured paving slabs. The magistrates’ court functioned until World War II.
