Roman Catholic church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary and the treasure of gold from Witaszkowo
Address |
Witaszkowo, 66-620 Gubin, Witaszkowo |
Built in 1749 as a Protestant temple and later converted into a Roman Catholic one, the church is a half-timbered structure with a pitched roof. Inside the church, you can see the preserved 18th Century pews, and the wooden Renaissance altat from 1596.
The village of Witaszkowo (German: Vettersfelde) will go down in history as the discovery site of the famous Scythian treasure. In 1882, a golden treasure trove was discovered in Witaszkowo, likely originating from the Black Sea and made around 500 BC. The trove included a 42 cm plaque in the shape of a fish, covered by 5 mm high figurines, a sword scythe with ornaments similar to those found on the fish plaque, a sword hilt, a needle, some jewels and a ring. The treasure was deposited in the Old Museum (Altes Museum) in Berlin; during the bombing raids over the city in World War II, it was hidden in the salt mine at Helmstedt. An identical copy of the fish plaque is displayed in the Middle Oder Archaeological Museum in Świdnica near Zielona Góra.
