The nature reserve is named after the nearby Lake Żurawno. This drying-up lake with opaque waters, supplied by a small watercourse flowing from the east, and probably also in part by ground waters. Human activity has a major impact on the lake, among them the now ruined windmill which was operating here in the first half of the 20th Century. The reserve is home to a number of bird species, most notably cranes, stock doves, black storks, sea eagles and ospreys. The waters of the reserve are inhabited by an interesting fish species called amur bitterling, which belongs to the carp family and is under protection.
