The first churches in Trzebiel were built already in the Middle Ages. The ruins of one such church were divided in the 16th Century into two parts: the Catholic and the Protestant one. In later years, the division became less religious and more national in nature, separating the church into the Lusatian and the German parts, and was maintained until the 20th Century.
