Medieval fortified settlement
Address |
Wapnica, 73-132 Suchań, Wapnica |
Wapnica stretches along the west bank of a 6 km long lake trough which in the past was probably filled with water. The area must have been important, given the fact that the Slavic tribes living here built three fortified settlements on a section of just 1.5 km. Two of the settlements were founded on a long peninsula cutting 1 km into the southern part of Lake Wapnickie from the side of Wapnica. Water was gradually drained from the lake since the Middle Ages, in particular due to marshes reclamation efforts and later amelioration. Eventually, as the water disappeared, the peninsula became just a patch of land. The remains of the settlements, in particular the bulwarks, are still visible.
