St Hubertus Shrine

Address Dębno, 74-400 Dębno
As a young man, St Hubertus refused to observe the Lent. On Good Friday in the year 695, he went hunting and chased his game. Suddenly, his dogs went silent and he saw a great white stag with a cross between its antlers. This divine vision drove Hubertus to abandon the royal court, entrusted his son to his brother Eudon and gave away his wealth to the poor. He went on to live as a hermit and evangelise the pagans of the Ardennes for 7 years. Later, he went on a pilgrimage to Rome where the Pope appointed him bishop of Maastricht. It is said that Hubertus had a healing touch. He would never kill again and became a staunch defender and friend to all animals. Today, he is revered as the patron saint of hunters.
